Important Maintenance Steps For Your Water Heater

The water heater is an integral part of your home. It's what brings hot water to many important appliances, such as the dishwasher and shower. To ensure it works properly for as long as possible, you need to perform these maintenance steps.

Adjust the Temperature

Many people often forget that they can make their home more energy-efficient simply by adjusting the temperature of their water heater. A few degrees lower, in fact, can actually help you save a lot of money. Adjusting the heater's temperature isn't that difficult, either.

First, you'll want to locate the temperature dial. It should be conveniently positioned on the side of the heater. Take off the cover and use a screwdriver to adjust the settings. The lower you set the temperature, the more money you can save. Just make sure you don't lower the temperature too much to where you're left with just warm water.

Drain the Tank Periodically

There will be times when sediment and containments get inside your water heater. This happens naturally over time, and you need to address them quickly before they have time to wear down important parts. Testing for these particles is fairly straightforward.

After placing a bucket on the ground in the appropriate place, open up the water-supply valve. As water comes out, check it for any lingering particles. If they are present, you'll want to have your entire water heater flushed. You can either do this bucket by bucket, or attach a hose to the valve that is then redirected away from your property.

Replace a Faulty Water Heater

Sometimes no matter what proactive maintenance steps you employ, your water heater won't work properly. Some common signs that you need a new heater include rusty water, old age, pools of water around the heater, and rumbling noises.

If any of these signs are present, you need to have the system replaced. This isn't that difficult if you hire a water heater installation company. They'll bring out the new unit and set it up for you. They'll even provide information about the unit, such as how to use integral controls and ways you can make it run more efficiently.

Since the water heater is such an important device for your daily routines at home, go the extra mile when it comes to maintenance. You then won't have to worry as much about costly repairs, nor going without hot water when it's needed the most.

About Me

Although it might seem like something that is easy to do, plumbing isn't one of those jobs for the faint of heart, especially in heavily used areas like bathrooms and kitchens. I started thinking about learning how to repair plumbing a few months ago, and it was really neat to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Before I knew it, I was able to streamline my entire home through proper repair, and I was impressed with the results. I wanted to start a website completely devoted to plumbing repair, so I made this blog. Check it out!
